About
Veysel Karani Camii bears the name of Uways al-Qaranī, the Yemeni ascetic and companion-by-love of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم who is mentioned in the Prophetic tradition as a figure of especially pure devotion and humble obscurity. According to the well-known narration, Uways cared for his elderly mother in Yemen and never met the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم in person, though the Prophet spoke of him with love and instructed his companions to seek him out for supplication after his own death. Uways has come to stand in Islamic tradition for a particular kind of sanctity — the devotion that works quietly, beneath the notice of the world, anchored in obedience to parents and in long hours of unseen prayer. To name a mosque Veysel Karani is therefore to invite worshippers into that stream of devotional imagination. The Mamak mosque bearing his name is a modest neighbourhood structure with a single minaret, a central dome, and a forecourt paved in stone. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones, and the mihrab is carefully finished. Calligraphic panels along the walls include inscriptions of the divine names and of Qur'anic verses. The imam's Friday sermons often engage with the themes that Uways's name evokes: the care of parents, the value of unseen worship, the spiritual rewards of humility. Women pray in an upper gallery, and Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih. The mosque's Thursday-night hatmi-şerif gatherings, at which the entire Qur'an is completed collectively through the recitation of individual juzʾ by members of the congregation, carry forward a devotional practice associated with the Uwaysī tradition and embody something of the quiet, inward spirit that the mosque's name invites every worshipper to cultivate within themselves. For Muslim visitors to Mamak, Veysel Karani Camii is an unfailingly welcoming place to pray, and its name is a quiet reminder that the greatest saints of the religion are often those who remain unknown except to God.
