🕌 Obligatory Fasting (Wajib)

Fasting the month of Ramadan is obligatory for every sane, adult Muslim who is able. Allah says: "O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain taqwa." — Al-Baqarah 183

⭐ Sunnah (Voluntary) Fasting

  • Monday & Thursday: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) used to fast these days. He said: "Deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, and I love for my deeds to be presented while I am fasting."
  • White Days (13th-15th): Three days each Hijri month. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Fasting three days of every month is like fasting the whole year."
  • Day of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah): For non-pilgrims. Expiates sins of two years.
  • Ashura (10th Muharram): Recommended to fast the 9th with it. Expiates sins of one year.
  • Six of Shawwal: Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six of Shawwal, it is as if they fasted the whole year.
  • Fasting in Sha'ban: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) used to fast extensively in Sha'ban.

🚫 Days When Fasting is Prohibited

  • Eid al-Fitr (1st Shawwal)
  • Eid al-Adha (10th Dhul Hijjah)
  • Days of Tashreeq (11th-13th Dhul Hijjah)

❓ What Breaks the Fast

  • Intentional eating or drinking
  • Intentional vomiting
  • Marital relations during fasting hours
  • Menstruation and postpartum bleeding

✅ What Does NOT Break the Fast

  • Eating or drinking out of forgetfulness
  • Unintentional vomiting
  • Using miswak or brushing teeth
  • Eye and ear drops (majority view)
  • Asthma inhaler (many scholars)

🎒 Exemptions from Fasting

  • Traveler: May break fast and make up later
  • Sick person: Temporary illness — make up later; chronic — feed a poor person per day
  • Pregnant/nursing: If they fear harm to themselves or their child
  • Elderly: If unable to fast, feed a poor person per day (fidyah)

🤲 Dua for Breaking Fast

"The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain if Allah wills." — Abu Dawud

🌙 Suhoor Etiquette

Delay Suhoor close to Fajr. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Take Suhoor, for indeed there is blessing in it." It is recommended to include dates and water.

📖 Quran Completion

It is recommended to complete the Quran in Ramadan. It is divided into 30 juz — one per day. Jibreel used to review the Quran with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) every Ramadan.

⭐ Laylat al-Qadr

Better than a thousand months. Seek it in the odd nights of the last ten (21, 23, 25, 27, 29). Its dua: "O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me."

🕌 Taraweeh & Qiyam

Taraweeh prayer is an emphasized Sunnah in Ramadan, performed after Isha. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Whoever prays during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, their previous sins will be forgiven."

🥤 Suhoor Tips

  • Drink plenty of water — at least 2-3 glasses
  • Eat slow-digesting foods: oats, whole wheat bread, eggs
  • Avoid salty and fried foods
  • Dates and milk are a blessed Prophetic choice

🍽️ Iftar Tips

  • Start with dates and water — Prophetic Sunnah and gently raises blood sugar
  • Don't rush — wait 10 minutes before the main meal
  • Balance protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates
  • Avoid overeating — your stomach needs time after fasting

💧 Hydration

Drink 8 glasses of water between Iftar and Suhoor. Spread them out over time. Avoid caffeine as it is a diuretic. Water-rich fruits like watermelon and cucumber help greatly.
