About
Pursaklar Merkez Camii serves as the central mosque of Pursaklar, a once-separate town on the northern edge of Ankara that has in recent decades been absorbed into the greater metropolitan area while retaining much of its distinct local identity. Merkez Camii is a common Turkish naming convention for the principal mosque of a town or district, the one from which the Friday prayer of the whole area is traditionally led. The Pursaklar example is an imposing modern structure built in the neo-classical Ottoman style favoured by recent Turkish mosque architecture: a large central dome flanked by half-domes, twin slim minarets rising to a considerable height, and a broad stone-paved courtyard with an ornamental fountain for ablution. The interior is spacious and airy, with soft natural light from high windows, a carpet in the familiar red and cream pattern, a finely worked mihrab of carved stone and tile, and a wooden minbar carved in traditional style. The women's gallery is generous and well-appointed. The mosque is served by multiple imams and staff members and is administratively linked to the provincial Diyanet office. Friday prayers draw very large congregations, and the khutba is broadcast on external loudspeakers for those worshippers who spill into the courtyard. Qur'an and ethics classes for children, adult study circles, and seasonal programmes of commemoration all run throughout the year. During Ramadan the mosque becomes a major social and spiritual hub of Pursaklar, with nightly tarawih, Qur'an khatms, and a full iftar programme. The mosque's annual mevlid celebration for Mawlid al-Nabī fills not only the prayer hall and courtyard but the surrounding streets, as residents bring out chairs, tea, and trays of sweets to share with their neighbours while the long poem of Süleyman Çelebi in honour of the birth of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم is chanted in the manner that has been preserved in Turkish Muslim practice for centuries. For visitors to the northern fringe of Ankara, Pursaklar Merkez Camii is a memorable place of prayer, and the surrounding streets contain a lively ecosystem of religious bookshops, modest family restaurants, and traditional tea gardens worth exploring at a leisurely pace.
