About
İmamlar Camii — literally 'the Imams' Mosque' — takes its name from a plural form that nods to the long Turkish tradition of honouring the religious scholars and prayer-leaders who have served the Muslim community across the centuries. The name may refer in the first instance to the four great Sunni imams of jurisprudence — Abū Ḥanīfa, Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī, and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal — whose legal schools have shaped the practice of the Muslim world, but it also gestures more broadly to all those imams who have led prayer and preserved knowledge in every generation. The Mamak mosque bearing this name is a classic neighbourhood structure of late twentieth-century Turkish style, with a single minaret, a central dome, and a small forecourt. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones, and the mihrab is carefully finished with Kütahya tile. A series of calligraphic panels along the walls sometimes includes the names of the four great imams in addition to the more usual inscriptions of divine names and Qur'anic verses. The imam, appointed by the Diyanet, is known for the clarity of his recitation and for Friday sermons that engage seriously with questions of classical jurisprudence as well as with contemporary concerns. Women pray in an upper gallery, and children attend Qur'an classes in the annex throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated in winter. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih and community iftars. The mosque's adult study circle, which meets each Thursday evening after the maghrib prayer, is currently working its way through a classical Hanafi primer on the essentials of worship, and the sight of the half-dozen men gathered around the teacher with their pens and notebooks is itself a small revival of the centuries-old Ottoman tradition of serious lay learning in the evening hours. For Muslim visitors to Mamak, İmamlar Camii is a welcoming and thoughtful place to pray, and its name is an invitation to remember the long chain of scholars through whose faithfulness the religion has been preserved and transmitted from the time of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم to the present day.
