About

Hazreti Ali Camii bears the name of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may God ennoble his face), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, the fourth rightly-guided caliph, and one of the most revered figures in the entire Islamic tradition. ʿAlī is remembered for his early acceptance of Islam as a child, for his courage in battle, for his piety and his eloquence, and for the depth of his learning in the sources of the religion. He is also remembered as the father of al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, the grandchildren of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم. In Turkish Sunni tradition, the love of ʿAlī occupies a particularly prominent place, and mosques bearing his name are common across the country. The Mamak mosque that bears this name is a dignified neighbourhood structure with a single minaret, a central dome, and a well-kept forecourt. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones, and the mihrab is carefully finished with Kütahya tile. Calligraphic panels along the walls include the name of ʿAlī alongside those of the other rightly-guided caliphs and of the first companions. The imam's Friday sermons often engage with the virtues and the sayings attributed to ʿAlī — his celebrated wisdom in matters of religion and in matters of the heart, his model of courage balanced by humility, his famous aphorisms that have been memorised by Muslim students for many centuries. Women pray in an upper gallery, and Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih. The mosque's Friday sermons sometimes include quotations from the Nahj al-Balāgha, the celebrated collection of sayings and orations attributed to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, and the fineness of those aphorisms — delivered in a measured Turkish translation — adds an element of classical eloquence to the weekly gathering that is particularly valued by members of the congregation with literary sensibilities. For Muslim visitors to Mamak, Hazreti Ali Camii is a welcoming and reflective place to pray, and the atmosphere is marked by a quiet reverence befitting its name.
