About
Hasköy Esentepe Camii takes its double-barrelled name from two contiguous localities in Mamak — Hasköy and Esentepe — both names reflecting the older village settlements that were later absorbed into Ankara's expansion. Hasköy, literally 'pure village' or 'excellent village', is a common Turkish place name, while Esentepe — 'the healthy hill' — evokes the mountainous terrain on which so much of Mamak is built. The mosque serves the residents of both neighbourhoods and stands on the boundary between them, a small architectural symbol of the way in which the growth of modern Ankara has folded together what were once distinct settlements. It is a compact neighbourhood structure with a single minaret, a central dome, and a well-kept forecourt. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones, and the mihrab is carefully finished with Kütahya tile. The walls carry calligraphic panels of divine names and Qur'anic verses. The imam's Friday sermons are known in the neighbourhood for their warmth and their engagement with the practical concerns of working-class family life — the ethics of good neighbourliness, the rights of the family, the importance of punctuality in prayer amid the distractions of modern work. Women pray in a comfortable upper gallery, and children attend Qur'an classes in the annex throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated in winter. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih and community iftars organised by local families. The view from the mosque's elevated forecourt, taking in the rooftops descending toward the valley and, on clear days, the distant ridges of Elmadağ beyond Ankara, is itself one of the quieter rewards of the short climb up to the prayer hall, and elderly members of the congregation often linger for a few minutes after the asr prayer simply to look out across the landscape in unhurried contemplation. For Muslim visitors to the eastern districts of Ankara, Hasköy Esentepe Camii offers an unfailingly welcoming place to pray, and the elevated position of the mosque on the flank of its hill rewards worshippers with a quiet view of the surrounding streets as they walk down to the forecourt at dusk.
