İbrahim Halilullah Camii

İbrahim Halilullah Camii bears one of the most beautiful names of a mosque in the Turkish-speaking world: Ibrāhīm Khalīlullāh, meaning 'Abraham the Friend of God', the epithet applied to the prophet Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) in both the Qur'an and the classical Islamic tradition. Ibrāhīm is the great exemplar of tawḥīd, the uncompromising devotion to the unity of God, and is the ancestor of the prophetic line through whom the monotheistic tradition has been transmitted to all subsequent generations. To name a mosque after him is to place it under the patronage of the father of the prophets and to invite the congregation into his legacy of sincere worship and self-emptying surrender to the divine will. Women pray in an upper gallery, and Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih. A small exhibition of classical calligraphic panels within the mosque includes a beautiful rendering of the verse 'and remember Our servant Ibrāhīm, the possessor of hands and sight', and the quality of the lettering is such that many worshippers pause before it for a long moment as they enter, taking in the verse itself as a preparation for the prayer to follow.
