About

A. Menderes Merkez Camii is named in memory of Adnan Menderes (1899–1961), the Prime Minister of Turkey from 1950 until the coup of 1960 and a figure whose legacy in the country's political and religious history is particularly weighty. Menderes is remembered among pious Turkish Muslims for having restored the Arabic call to prayer, which had been replaced with a Turkish version during the early Republican period, and for a general policy of greater openness toward the religious sensibilities of the Turkish people. His name on a mosque therefore carries a particular historical resonance for its congregation, reminding them of the struggles and recoveries of Turkish Muslim life during the twentieth century. The Mamak mosque bearing his name is the central mosque of its sub-district, a substantial structure with twin minarets, a large central dome, and a broad paved courtyard. Inside, the prayer hall is finished to a high standard, with a richly decorated mihrab, calligraphy in several classical scripts on the walls, and a spacious upper gallery for women. The imam is supported by a team of muezzins, and Friday attendance is very high. Sermons often engage thoughtfully with the themes of faith and freedom, gratitude for the restoration of public Islamic practice, and the responsibilities that follow for the present generation. Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year, and study circles for adults tackle topics of tafsīr and fiqh. During Ramadan the mosque's programme is particularly extensive, with nightly tarawih, Qur'an khatms, and large community iftars. For Muslim visitors to Mamak, A. The mosque's archive includes a number of historical documents relating to the restoration of the Arabic adhan during the Menderes era, and on certain anniversaries the imam reads brief selections from them in his Friday sermon, the congregation listening with particular attention as they are reminded of the devotional changes through which their grandparents and great-grandparents lived. Menderes Merkez Camii offers a dignified place of prayer and a tangible reminder of the long historical struggle through which the Turkish Muslim people have reclaimed and preserved the rhythms of their public faith.
