Mosque Alhmd"hmdy Hrzallh"

Within the crowded streets of Jabalya, the largest refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, the masjid known as al Hamd, dedicated to the memory of Hamdi Harzallah, offers worshippers a place of quiet devotion in one of the most densely populated corners of the world. The name al Hamd, meaning praise, is taken from the opening word of the Qur'an's first complete chapter, al Fatiha, and is a title frequently given to mosques to remind those who enter that every breath and every blessing calls for gratitude to the Creator. Naming the mosque after Hamdi Harzallah honours a local benefactor whose generosity and perseverance made its construction possible.

Jabalya itself was established in 1948 as a camp for Palestinian families displaced from the villages of the southern coast of historic Palestine, and over the decades it grew into a town in its own right. Life here has been marked by repeated hardship, yet the residents have maintained a remarkable tradition of religious learning, social solidarity, and charitable works. The Gaza Strip as a whole sits along the southeastern shore of the Mediterranean, a narrow coastal plain whose Islamic heritage reaches back to the earliest conquests, and whose old city of Gaza contains the tomb of the great grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.

The building is typical of Gaza neighbourhood mosques. Walls of concrete and locally made blocks enclose a rectangular prayer hall on the ground floor, with a women's gallery above, a simple mihrab of painted plaster, a wooden minbar, and a slender minaret rising above the flat roof. Carpets donated by families of the camp cover the floor, and a small room beside the entrance serves as a teaching space for young memorisers of the Qur'an. On Fridays the khutbah fills the hall and overflows into the street, as worshippers gather with steadfast hearts despite the difficulties of daily life under blockade and frequent bombardment.
