About
Honouring the noble companion Asma bint Abi Bakr, may God be pleased with her and with her father, this masjid rises in the crowded northern Gaza town of Jabalya, within the Gaza Strip of Palestine. Asma was the elder daughter of the noble Abu Bakr al Siddiq, the first Caliph and closest companion of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. During the hijra from Mecca to Medina, she is famed for tearing her belt in two, using one half to tie the provisions her father carried for the Prophet, and earning the beautiful title Dhat al Nitaqayn, the woman of the two belts.
Gaza's Islamic heritage reaches to the earliest days of the faith. The great grandfather of the Prophet, Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, was buried in the old city during a trading journey, and his tomb beneath the Sayyid Hashim Mosque remains beloved to this day. Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, brought the armies of Islam peacefully to the Gazan coast in 634, and the city has borne its Islamic identity with patience ever since through many trials of history.
Jabalya, north of Gaza City, is among the most densely populated settlements on earth, home to a refugee population whose endurance has inspired believers worldwide. The masjid dedicated to Asma bint Abi Bakr offers the women and children of the neighbourhood a teaching in strength, patience, and quiet courage drawn from the example of the noble daughter of the first Caliph. Qur'an classes for girls continue in the side rooms, naming great women of Islamic history as models of faith.
The building itself is modest, with plain white walls, a simple dome, and a single minaret whose adhan carries across the crowded streets. Inside, calligraphic panels inscribe verses from Surah al Nisa and quotations from the wise counsel of Asma to her son Abdullah ibn al Zubayr before his martyrdom in Mecca. The present page lists prayer timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the masjid, along with the Jabalya address and notes that help any visitor or neighbour plan worship even when conditions in Gaza are exceptionally difficult. Travellers able to reach the town are urged to remember the steadfast women, men, and children of Jabalya in their supplications, to send abundant salawat upon the Prophet, and to ask the Most Merciful to grant healing, sustenance, and swift relief to the believers whose love for this land echoes every dignity praised in the example of Asma the radiant daughter of al Siddiq.
