About
Deep inside the northern Gaza neighbourhood of Shaykh Radwan, Masjid Shuhada al Shaykh Radwan honours the memory of those from this devoted community who gave their lives during the sorrows that have marked Palestinian history. Shaykh Radwan is a densely populated quarter of Gaza City named after a revered local scholar, and its narrow streets, low whitewashed houses, and busy markets have witnessed the patient endurance of the Palestinian people for many generations. The wider city of Gaza was mentioned in the inscriptions of Thutmose III more than three thousand years ago and served as a major trade stop on the road between Egypt and the Levant. Gaza's Islamic heritage is ancient and distinguished. The great grandfather of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, is buried in the city, and the early mosque that carries his name in the old quarter remains a beloved destination. The Companions who campaigned in Palestine under the caliphate of Umar ibn al Khattab (may God be pleased with him) left behind tombs and place names across the coastal plain, and the residents of Jabalya and Shaykh Radwan have inherited a quiet attachment to those early beginnings. This neighbourhood masjid serves the community in the humble manner typical of northern Gaza mosques. Whitewashed walls, a simple minaret that carries the adhan above the crowded streets, a tiled courtyard with a small ablution fountain, and a prayer hall covered by donated carpets welcome worshippers from nearby apartment blocks. The name honouring the shuhada reminds every visitor of the duty to pray for the deceased and to seek mercy for the wounded. Up to date daily prayer times for Masjid Shuhada al Shaykh Radwan in Jabalya, the address, a map, and practical notes can be found on this page by Gaza residents, Palestinian students, travellers from elsewhere in the coastal strip, and sympathetic visitors remembering the people of this land in their supplications. Gaza is known for its citrus groves, its fishermen returning at dawn with Mediterranean catches, and the ancient Great Omari Mosque in the old city. After every prayer here, believers are gently invited to raise their hands for the Palestinian families, that God may grant them safety, steadfastness, and relief from every hardship that the passing years bring upon their lives.
