About
Serving the dense neighbourhoods of Jabalya in the northern Gaza Strip, this mosque bears the honoured name of al Imam Abu Hanifa al Nu'man ibn Thabit, the Kufan jurist whose reasoned approach to Islamic law shaped millions of lives from Balkh to Bursa. Jabalya itself is an ancient settlement whose name recalls the Mount Jibal mentioned by medieval geographers, and it grew markedly after 1948 when displaced Palestinian families made it home, forming one of the largest refugee camps in the Levant. Through decades of hardship the people of Jabalya have clung to their faith with remarkable tenacity, filling mosques at every adhan despite shortages, blockades, and repeated military assaults. The building itself follows the simple Gazan idiom common along the coastal plain, with sand coloured rendered walls, a square minaret topped by a green finial, and a hypostyle prayer hall cooled by louvred windows that catch the Mediterranean breeze. The mihrab is tiled in cobalt blue, and a modest wooden minbar invites the khateeb each Friday to address congregants on patience, family solidarity, and the honour of seeking knowledge. Daily prayers proceed without pause regardless of circumstances, and dawn Fajr draws an especially dedicated core of worshippers who walk through narrow alleys before sunrise. Ramadan transforms the mosque into a beacon of mutual care, with neighbours sharing simple iftars of lentil soup, olive oil, and thyme bread, and taraweeh prayers extending late into the night. Eid mornings, despite every adversity, echo with the takbir of children in new clothes and families who refuse to surrender their joy. The mosque also functions as a small centre for Quran memorisation, giving young students a firm grasp of tajweed under local teachers. Nearby landmarks include the older Jabalya market, the Gaza coastal road, and the storied sands that once hosted ancient trade caravans moving between Egypt and the Levant. An adjoining small library stocks mushafs, simplified Arabic tafsir, and children's story collections about the companions, may God be pleased with them. The imam offers marriage counselling, reconciliation between estranged relatives, and spiritual consultation for those bearing heavy grief. Volunteer elders teach tajweed classes to war orphans, recognising that educating the next generation in proper recitation is among the most durable forms of resistance and hope. Every corner of this building testifies to the steadfastness of Gaza's people, whose faith has withstood decades of siege while remaining gracious and dignified before strangers.
