About
Hacı Nuri Topbaş Camii in the Ümraniye district of Istanbul, Turkey, is a contemporary mosque carrying the name of Hacı Nuri Topbaş, a member of the respected Topbaş family associated with Turkish Sufi scholarship and publishing in the modern era. The Hacı honorific indicates that the namesake completed the sacred pilgrimage to Makkah, and the broader Topbaş family has been linked with the tradition of Naqshbandi-Khalidi Sufism in Istanbul, whose scholars have played a significant role in shaping contemporary Turkish religious life through writing, teaching, and pastoral work. Ümraniye is one of the large Asian-side districts whose population expanded significantly in the later twentieth century as Istanbul's metropolitan area grew, and the dense residential blocks of the area are served by a network of neighbourhood mosques of which Hacı Nuri Topbaş Camii is one. Architecturally the building adopts contemporary Turkish mosque vocabulary, drawing on classical Ottoman silhouettes in modern materials: a dome and minaret in traditional profile, a generous carpeted prayer hall, a mihrab and mimbar of traditional craftsmanship, wudu facilities at the side, a women's section either separate or raised at the rear, and calligraphic decoration on the interior walls. The Friday khutbah follows the Diyanet's weekly text in Turkish. The congregation reflects the mixed social character of Ümraniye, with tradesmen, office workers, students, and retirees all present in the rows. Ramadan transforms the masjid's use patterns, with iftar gatherings and taraweeh prayers extending through the evening and into the night. Visitors passing through Ümraniye for any reason can include a brief stop here at prayer time without difficulty. Modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women entering the prayer hall, quiet conduct throughout, and photography confined to outside of active prayer are the ordinary courtesies. The muezzin and imam are usually welcoming of respectful enquirers outside of busy prayer times. Published works of the Topbaş family are often available for purchase or free distribution in a small bookstall near the entrance, allowing worshippers to deepen their study of classical Sufi texts.
