About

Kirazlıtepe Büyük Camii in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul, Turkey, is the main mosque serving the Kirazlıtepe neighbourhood, a residential area whose name, meaning Cherry Hill, evokes the orchards that once covered the higher ground of the Asian-side district before urbanisation transformed the landscape. Büyük, meaning great or large, identifies this masjid as the principal mosque of the neighbourhood, as distinguished from any smaller mescids that may serve particular streets or blocks. Üsküdar itself is one of the most historically significant districts of Istanbul, with a deep Islamic heritage reflected in grand Ottoman mosques, dervish lodges, and tombs of revered shaykhs scattered across its hills. Kirazlıtepe, farther from the waterfront and higher in the district, developed significantly in the twentieth century as residential growth extended into the former agricultural areas. The masjid reflects the contemporary Turkish mosque tradition: classical Ottoman silhouettes in modern materials, a generous carpeted prayer hall, a mihrab and mimbar of traditional craftsmanship, a women's section, wudu facilities, and calligraphic decoration. The Friday khutbah follows the Diyanet's weekly national text in Turkish. The congregation is drawn from the surrounding apartment blocks and streets, reflecting the mixed social fabric of the area. Ramadan transforms the masjid's use patterns, with iftar gatherings, taraweeh prayers, and a general intensification of community activity through the holy month. Visitors passing through Kirazlıtepe for any reason can include a brief stop here at prayer time without difficulty. The imam and the muezzin are usually welcoming of respectful guests outside of the prayer and khutbah themselves. Modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women entering the prayer hall, quiet conduct throughout, and photography confined to outside of active prayer are the expected courtesies. The higher position of the neighbourhood affords pleasant views of the Bosphorus on clear days from the nearby streets. Cherry blossoms in the spring still appear occasionally on mature trees in the neighbourhood, a trace of the orchards that once gave Kirazlıtepe its name before the expansion of the residential quarters.
