About

Altunizade Mosque in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul, Turkey, takes its name from the Altunizade neighbourhood, whose name in turn honours the Altunizade family, an influential Ottoman lineage of the late imperial period whose members held important administrative and religious positions. The neighbourhood itself occupies a prime location on the Asian side of Istanbul, on the higher ground overlooking the Bosphorus, and has long been associated with the refined residential and religious character of the broader Üsküdar district. The mosque named for the family reflects this refinement in both its architectural presence and its careful integration into the neighbourhood. The building adopts classical Ottoman silhouettes, with a dome and minaret of traditional profile, a modest forecourt with ablution facilities, and an interior arranged for the five daily prayers with a mihrab oriented precisely toward Makkah, a wooden mimbar for the Friday khutbah, and carpets laid in neat rows across the hall. Calligraphic decoration on the walls and dome honours Allah, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, and the rightly guided caliphs. The congregation at the daily prayers is drawn from the surrounding apartment blocks and streets, with professionals, civil servants, retirees, and long-time residents present. Friday prayers fill the hall. The Diyanet's weekly national sermon text shapes the khutbah delivered in Turkish. Visitors crossing from the European side by ferry to explore Üsküdar's Ottoman and post-Ottoman heritage will find Altunizade Mosque a pleasant stop in a wider itinerary. Modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women entering the prayer hall, quiet conduct throughout, and photography avoided during active prayer are the expected courtesies for any visit. The Bosphorus views from nearby vantage points reward an unhurried walk in the neighbourhood after prayer. The refined reputation of Üsküdar as a district of scholars and Sufis adds a particular atmosphere to the mosque, where contemplative worship feels naturally suited to the neighbourhood's long heritage of learning, poetry, and devotion stretching back through the Ottoman centuries into the present day of the Turkish Republic.
