About
Along a bustling lane of Tungi in the Gazipur district just north of Dhaka, the Alhaz Mohor Khan Waqf Estate Central Jame Mosque serves the working families, garment factory workers, and small traders of one of Bangladesh's fastest growing industrial suburbs. The title Alhaz, from the Arabic al Hajj, honours Mohor Khan as a man who completed the pilgrimage to Mecca, and the Bengali term waqf estate indicates that the surrounding lands were endowed by his family as a permanent charitable trust to maintain the mosque, its school, and the welfare of its congregation. Such family endowments have long been a feature of Bengali Muslim life, keeping the Prophetic ideal of institutional charity alive.
Tungi sits on the northern bank of the Turag River, only a short drive from the biennial Ijtima gathering grounds where some of the largest peaceful Muslim assemblies in the world are held. The district's Islamic history is shaped by the saints of medieval Bengal, especially Shah Jalal of Sylhet, may God have mercy upon him, whose disciples carried the faith along the river valleys of eastern Bengal during the fourteenth century. Dhaka itself rose as a Mughal provincial capital in the seventeenth century, and its skyline has been punctuated with domes and minarets ever since.
Architecturally the mosque follows the lively Bangladeshi urban idiom: a central dome finished in gleaming white plaster and crowned with a brass crescent, flanked by two slender minarets rising in three tapering stages with decorative banding in green and gold, and a façade enlivened by pointed keel arches tiled in floral motifs. A wide entrance porch shelters worshippers from the heavy monsoon rains. Inside, the interior feels open and well lit, its floor covered in patterned green carpet, its mihrab carved in white marble with Thuluth calligraphy calling on God and offering benedictions to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and its minbar carved in teak with geometric openwork panels.
Daily prayers, Friday khutbas attended by thousands of garment workers, Ramadan iftar, Quran memorisation classes, and eid congregations that extend into the adjacent lanes fill the mosque's busy weeks.
