About

Dedicated to Imam Hasan al Mujtaba, peace be upon him, the elder son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, and grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, this Shazand mosque in the Markazi province of central Iran functions also as a cultural centre named in his honour. Imam Hasan al Mujtaba, peace be upon him, bore the epithet al Mujtaba meaning the chosen one, and his life of patience, generosity, and wise leadership during the turbulent years following the passing of his father remains a model for every believer seeking wisdom amid difficulty. He is buried in the cemetery of al Baqi in Madinah, and his memory is cherished across the Muslim world. Shazand itself is a town in the western highlands of Markazi province, surrounded by agricultural land and industrial installations that have shaped its modern economy. Iranian mosque architecture carries one of the richest traditions in the Islamic world, combining glazed tile work in turquoise, cobalt, and white, muqarnas vaulted entries, broad iwan portals, and domed prayer halls whose acoustics amplify the reciter's voice through every corner. This mosque draws on that tradition at a scale suited to its town setting, with a tiled entry portal, a prayer hall carpeted in soft reds and greens, and a mihrab niche surrounded by delicate inscriptions. The cultural centre side of the institution hosts lectures, poetry readings, noha and marthiya recitations, and educational programmes for youth that weave religious themes with cultural expression. Five daily prayers gather men and women from surrounding neighbourhoods, and Jumu'ah fills the hall. Sermons in Persian draw from Qur'anic ayaat, hadith, and the recorded teachings of the Imams of the Ahl al Bayt, peace be upon them. Ramadan transforms the calendar with communal iftar meals and extensive religious programmes. Qur'anic memorisation classes meet through the year, and older students engage with Persian language commentary traditions. Women participate fully in cultural programmes. Nearby attractions include the Arak industrial city, the Timcheh Haj Hassan architectural complex in Arak, and the mountain landscapes that frame daily life across Markazi province. Imam Hasan al Mujtaba's example of patience and wise compromise remains deeply relevant for contemporary believers, and the cultural centre bearing his name continues exploring how his legacy might shape responses to modern challenges and difficult moments.
