About
Founded by Albanian American families who made their homes along the western shore of Lake Michigan, the American Albanian Islamic Center of Wisconsin gathers a community whose roots stretch from the Balkan mountains to the industrial heartland of the United States. Pleasant Prairie, a pleasant lakeside village in Kenosha County, has welcomed waves of European immigrants since the nineteenth century, and Albanians arrived in meaningful numbers from the early twentieth century onward, often settling first in Chicago and Detroit before moving north into Wisconsin for work in the mills and factories of the Great Lakes region. This centre preserves the language, customs, and devotional life they carried from the old country.
Albania accepted Islam gradually after the arrival of Ottoman rule in the late fourteenth century, and over subsequent generations Albanian scholars contributed richly to Islamic sciences, poetry, and the tradition of bejtexhinj, writers who composed religious verse in the Albanian language using the Arabic script. Names such as Naim Frasheri and the great nineteenth century scholars of Shkoder and Elbasan remain honoured among the community, whose children are still taught to recite prayers in Arabic while listening to sermons in Albanian and English.
The centre hosts the five daily prayers, Jumu'ah, and the two Eids, as well as weekend classes in Qur'anic recitation, Albanian language, and Islamic history for children born on American soil. During Ramadan, the kitchen fills with the aroma of byrek, speca te mbushur, and sweet trilece, as families break their fasts together in the traditional Albanian style. The imam, following a long custom of the Balkans, offers his khutbah in a warm blend of Albanian and English, reminding worshippers that the love of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, unites every tongue and every land.
Visitors searching for accurate prayer times in Kenosha County will find on this page the current timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha, along with the centre's full address, a clear location map, and practical notes that help travellers, commuters, and newcomers attend congregational worship here comfortably throughout the year.
