About

Commemorating the valiant uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, Masjid Hamzah ibn Abd al Muttalib in the oasis town of Nefta invokes the memory of Hamzah, may God be pleased with him, who was granted the title Lion of God and Master of the Martyrs after his sacrifice at the battle of Uhud. Nefta is one of the most evocative oases of southern Tunisia, its date palm groves fed by the ancient springs that gave the town its Berber name, and its whitewashed quarter of Al Qurna rising in terraces above the corbeille depression. The Islamic heritage of the Jerid region is remarkable, for Nefta has long been styled the Kufa of the Maghreb, a title earned through the density of its religious schools, zawiyas and learned families, producing scholars and ascetics whose legacy is preserved in its countless small mosques and shrines. The regional architectural tradition of southern Tunisia favours brickwork of pale clay fired in local kilns, domed chambers softened by carved arches, slender square minarets echoing the Aghlabid style, and courtyard fountains fed by the oasis waters. This mosque hosts the five daily prayers that punctuate life in the oasis, with the Fajr congregation particularly beloved by elders who walk from their corbeille terraces in the blue light before sunrise. Friday prayers draw date farmers in from the palmeraie, the khutbah is spoken in classical Arabic shaded by the Tunisian vernacular, and tarawih prayers continue through Ramadan when the cool courtyard welcomes extended night worship. Eid mornings bring children receiving gifts of figs and dates, and the elders distribute sweets. Travellers arriving from Tozeur to visit the Ras al Ayn spring, the Sidi Bou Ali shrine or the surreal landscape of the Chott el Jerid salt flat will find Masjid Hamzah ibn Abd al Muttalib a peaceful station within their desert itinerary. Nefta's palm wine and date syrup traders offer complimentary refreshments to worshippers departing the Friday sermon, continuing a traditional gesture of oasis hospitality that welcomed even medieval caravans on their arduous trans Saharan crossings through Tozeur and Kebili.
