About

Just outside Narayanganj on the southern edge of greater Dhaka, the Sayedpur Central Eidgah and Grave serves the Muslim residents of Sayedpur village as their principal ground for the two Eid prayers and as the respected communal burial site. Combining an eidgah with a cemetery is a common arrangement in rural Bangladesh, the two facilities reinforcing the Islamic teaching that life ends in meeting one's Lord, and that the festive morning of Eid itself begins with remembrance of those who have preceded us into His mercy. Narayanganj is one of the oldest trading towns of the Bengal delta, known historically as the Dundee of the east for its jute and textile industries and today forming an important industrial extension of the Dhaka metropolitan region. The Muslim community of Narayanganj reaches back through the long history of Bengal's embrace of Islam from the thirteenth century onwards, initiated by missionaries such as Shah Jalal Yemeni and his companions, may God be pleased with them, whose tombs and khanqahs scatter across the delta region. The eidgah itself is a broad rectangular open ground bounded by a low boundary wall, with a raised mihrab and minbar platform at its western end facing the Kaaba. The grave area occupies an adjoining section with neat rows of earthen mounds, each marked by a simple headstone and often shaded by mango or jackfruit trees. On the two Eid mornings the ground fills with men, women, and children in their finest attire, the takbir rising in chorus before the two rakat prayer and the khutbah. Following the prayer, families often visit the graves of their forebears, reciting Surah al Fatiha and Ya Sin for the comfort of the departed. Throughout the year the eidgah hosts occasional community gatherings, funeral prayers, and Ramadan talks. Visitors approaching Narayanganj can reach the site by local road, finding it easily recognised by its crescent topped gate and the quiet dignity of the ground and cemetery. Delta dawns painted in rose and gold bathe the eidgah in an unforgettable light as families process quietly towards family graves after the festive sermon concludes.
