About

Set in the leafy Johannesburg suburb of Modderfontein in Gauteng Province, the Abdullah bin Salaam Jummah Masjid honours a noble Companion of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Abdullah ibn Salam, may God be pleased with him, was a Jewish rabbi of Medina who accepted Islam after recognising the prophetic signs in the Messenger's face and teaching. His acceptance strengthened the young Muslim community of Medina, and his wisdom became a treasured source of hadith and of careful explanation of scriptural truth. Naming a masjid after him reminds every worshipper that Islam welcomes sincere seekers from every background.

The Muslim community of South Africa has a proud and varied heritage. Indian indentured labourers arrived at the Cape and Natal from the seventeenth century onward, Malay political exiles were brought by the Dutch East India Company, and local African converts joined their ranks over the generations. Johannesburg grew from a rough mining camp in the late nineteenth century into the greatest city south of the Sahara, and its Muslim neighbourhoods preserve the customs, cuisines, and recitation styles of the peoples who built them. Modderfontein, once home to dynamite works and now a fast growing mixed development area, welcomes newer families from South Asia, Somalia, Egypt, and beyond.

The masjid's Friday khutbah is usually delivered in English, the common tongue of this diverse congregation, with supplications offered in Arabic. The building combines classical Islamic features with the practical lines of modern South African architecture. A central dome, a slender minaret, generous parking, and well maintained ablution facilities welcome commuters arriving from the nearby business parks for Jumu'ah. During Ramadan the kitchen prepares iftar meals that reflect the multicultural character of the community, offering biryani one evening and Cape Malay bobotie the next.
