About
İSTOÇ Camii takes its name from the vast İSTOÇ Wholesale Centre, one of Istanbul's major commercial complexes, situated on the European side of the Turkish metropolis in the Mahmutbey area. İSTOÇ, short for İstanbul Toptancılar Çarşısı, the Istanbul Wholesalers' Market, houses thousands of wholesalers, offices, and showrooms trading in everything from textiles and leather goods to electronics and household wares, and the masjid attached to it serves the very particular community of traders, warehouse staff, transporters, and customers who pass through its grounds each day in large numbers. A commercial masjid of this scale fulfils a deeply Turkish pattern in which every major market has its own mosque, allowing trade to pause for prayer at each of the five appointed times rather than obliging worshippers to travel elsewhere during busy working hours. The mosque is usually well-maintained, with a spacious prayer hall capable of absorbing large Friday congregations, full wudu facilities, and sometimes a small bookshop and imam's office. The call to prayer here punctuates the working day with particular clarity: at Dhuhr the offices empty briefly as shopkeepers bring down their shutters; at Asr tea glasses are set aside; by Maghrib the whole complex hushes for a moment as the adhan rolls through loudspeakers across acres of parking and warehousing. Turkey's commercial culture is steeped in this rhythm, and the İSTOÇ mosque is one of its most visible expressions in the city. The khutbah on Fridays follows the national Diyanet text and is delivered in Turkish throughout. Visitors who find themselves at İSTOÇ for business can easily include the congregational prayer in their schedule; those passing through purely as tourists are less likely to encounter it. Modest dress, removal of shoes, and respectful quiet are expected courtesies, and women are asked to cover their hair before entering the main hall. Labourers unloading trucks at the wholesale terminals adjoining the masjid often pause in the shaded doorway to remove overalls before entering the carpeted prayer area with proper adab before joining the rows of prayer.
