About

Sinza Islamic centre is a mosque and community hub serving the Muslim residents of Sinza, a neighbourhood on the western side of Dar es Salaam that has grown rapidly in recent decades into a busy residential and commercial district. The centre plays several overlapping roles: it is the masjid where local families pray their five daily prayers and gather for jumu'ah, a madrasa where children study Qur'an and the basics of the religion, and a meeting place for community affairs including marriage arrangements, zakat distribution and the mediation of small disputes. The building includes a spacious prayer hall that fills on Fridays and during Ramadan, separate facilities for women, a reliable ablution area and teaching rooms used by the afternoon Qur'an programme. Friday khutbahs are delivered in Kiswahili and typically anchor their practical advice in verses of Qur'an and well-known hadith. Teachers at the madrasa cover Qur'an recitation and memorisation, tajweed, the articles of faith, the fiqh of purification and prayer, the seerah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and the cultivation of good character. The centre is active in charitable work, organising the collection and distribution of zakat and sadaqah to needy families, orphans and travellers, with a small committee of trusted elders overseeing the process. During Ramadan the mosque becomes one of the busiest in Sinza, with full taraweeh, shared iftars and active i'tikaf in the final ten nights. Visitors passing through the neighbourhood are welcome to attend prayer and observe the teaching, and those who wish to support the centre's ongoing work can do so through donations toward the upkeep of the building, the stipends of its teachers and its charitable outreach to the wider community. A long-standing collaboration between Sinza Islamic Centre and a number of local professionals has produced modest programmes on personal finance, work ethics and family law, delivered at accessible levels so that ordinary worshippers can benefit, reflecting the centre's view that serving the community means equipping it for real life.
