About

Masjid Quuba in Magomeni takes its name from the first mosque built in Islam, Masjid Quba in the outskirts of Madinah, whose foundations were laid by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) upon his arrival from Makkah. That original masjid is praised in the Qur'an as a place founded upon taqwa, and naming a Dar es Salaam neighbourhood mosque after it is a way of reaching back to that pure beginning and asking Allah to let the same blessing rest on this corner of East Africa. The building itself is a plain community mosque, serving the surrounding streets with the five daily prayers and Friday congregation. The prayer hall is kept simple, with mats on a swept floor, a modest minbar, and a mihrab oriented to Makkah. The imam leads prayers with a steady, unhurried pace, and the khutbah is delivered in Kiswahili with Arabic verses and hadith quoted in the original. Sermons often highlight the virtues of the Muhajirun and Ansar, the importance of building strong Muslim communities, and the link between sincere intention and accepted worship. Attendance is strongest at maghrib and isha, when local workers return from the day's labours, and jumu'ah consistently fills the hall. A small teaching circle meets here for children in the afternoons, introducing them to Qur'an recitation, basic tajweed, the pillars of iman and the fiqh of purification and prayer. During Ramadan the mosque becomes a central node in the neighbourhood's spiritual life, with taraweeh, communal iftars, and extra recitation sessions drawing worshippers of all ages. Visitors are welcomed, and donations toward the mosque's upkeep and its modest charitable outreach are encouraged. A small annual event at the mosque commemorates the memory of the original Quba by encouraging worshippers to pray two rak'ahs of tahiyyat al-masjid whenever they enter, following the Prophetic encouragement that such a practice carries a weight of reward that ordinary daily life rarely makes available. The mosque's volunteer committee has over the years cultivated a small archive of photographs and brief written memories of Masjid Quba in Madinah, which it shares with worshippers planning their first pilgrimage.
