About

Masjid Jumuiyatil Islamiya in Magomeni is a community mosque whose name evokes the idea of the Islamic community itself — jumuiyah — reminding all who enter that they are part of a larger family of believers linked by faith, worship and mutual responsibility. The masjid serves the densely populated streets of this Dar es Salaam neighbourhood with a full cycle of five daily prayers in congregation and a lively Friday gathering. The building is a typical community mosque in the Tanzanian coastal tradition: a clean, whitewashed prayer hall, a modest minbar, a functional ablution area, and a courtyard that swells with worshippers on Fridays and during special days. The imam's Kiswahili khutbahs often return to the theme of community — the rights that Muslims have on each other, the importance of maintaining ties of kinship, the obligation to support the needy and the oppressed, and the value of patience in handling the small frictions of shared urban life. Attendance peaks at maghrib and isha, when the streets are cooler and the day's work winds down, and jumu'ah fills the hall and much of the courtyard. The mosque hosts an afternoon Qur'an programme for children, led by volunteer teachers, and supports occasional evening lectures for adults on topics from family life to halal livelihood. Ramadan is a defining moment in the mosque's yearly cycle, with taraweeh prayers, shared iftars arranged for poorer families and travellers, Qur'an completion gatherings and a real sense of collective devotion. The two Eid prayers draw the entire neighbourhood, and the atmosphere is warm with greetings and shared meals. Visitors passing through Magomeni are welcome to attend prayer at Masjid Jumuiyatil Islamiya, and donations toward upkeep, teaching work and the mosque's modest charitable outreach are quietly encouraged. Over the years the imam of Masjid Jumuiyatil Islamiya has been asked to help resolve small family disputes among the congregation, and his approach — hear all sides, remind everyone of the rights Islam places upon each of them, and insist on forgiveness where possible — has earned the mosque a quiet reputation for bringing troubled households back into balance.
