About

Al Masjid Umar Bin Khatwab in Magomeni honours in its name one of the most beloved figures in Islamic history: Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Rightly-Guided Caliph, whose justice, decisiveness and piety are celebrated across the Muslim world. To name a mosque after him is to invoke those qualities for the community that gathers beneath its roof — a desire that the prayers offered here should be matched by upright dealings, honest work and the courage to speak the truth. The masjid serves the surrounding neighbourhood of Dar es Salaam as a full working mosque, hosting the five daily prayers in congregation and a strong jumu'ah each week. The prayer hall is clean and well kept, with mats on a swept floor, a modest minbar and a mihrab oriented to Makkah, and the ablution area supports the full cycle of daily worship. Khutbahs are delivered in Kiswahili and often draw on the life of Umar and the other Companions as examples of how to live faith consistently in the ordinary pressures of work, family and community. Attendance is strong at maghrib and isha and impressive on Fridays, with worshippers sometimes spilling into the courtyard. The mosque supports an afternoon Qur'an school for children, covering recitation, tajweed, the articles of faith, the fiqh of purification and prayer, and the seerah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) along with stories of the Companions. During Ramadan the programme expands with taraweeh, shared iftars, Qur'an completion events and heightened attendance at fajr. Visitors to Magomeni who wish to pray behind a masjid that takes Umar's name are welcome, and donations toward upkeep, teaching work and charitable outreach are quietly encouraged by the committee of elders who keep the mosque running year after year. The imam frequently relays stories of Umar's walks through the streets of Madinah at night, checking on the welfare of his people, as a reminder that Islamic leadership begins with concern for the welfare of ordinary families and that the measure of any community's health lies in how it treats its weakest members.
