About

Al-masjid Aqswa in Magomeni is one of several mosques across Dar es Salaam that honour Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem by taking its blessed name. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam, the site of the Prophet's night journey (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and an enduring symbol of Muslim connection to the land of Palestine. Naming a local mosque after it in this corner of East Africa is a quiet but powerful way of keeping that connection alive in the hearts of the congregation. The masjid itself is a working community building: a clean prayer hall, a reliable ablution area, a modest minbar and mihrab, and a courtyard where worshippers gather before and after salah. The five daily prayers are offered in congregation, with jumu'ah drawing a strong crowd from the surrounding streets. The Kiswahili khutbah often touches on the cause of Palestine alongside other ethical and practical themes, reminding the congregation of their duty to pray for their brothers and sisters in distress and to act justly in their own daily lives. Between prayers the mosque is used for small teaching circles, and in the afternoons children gather for Qur'an classes that cover recitation, tajweed, aqeedah and the fiqh of worship. During Ramadan the mosque expands its programme with full taraweeh, shared iftars, Qur'an completion events and special du'as for the Muslims worldwide, with particular prayers for the liberation of Al-Aqsa. Visitors to Magomeni are welcome to attend prayer here, and donations toward the mosque's upkeep, its teaching work and its charitable outreach are quietly encouraged. Al-masjid Aqswa reminds worshippers that geography cannot divide the ummah when hearts remain joined in sincere prayer. During the nights of the last ten of Ramadan the mosque sees a gentle intensification of prayer, with worshippers staying longer in quiet recitation and supplication, and the imam regularly reminds the congregation that the reward of a single night of Laylat al-Qadr surpasses the worship of a thousand months of ordinary life.
