About
AL-Madrasatul Maa-wal Islamiyah is a combined mosque and Islamic school in Magomeni, one of Dar es Salaam's densely populated historic districts. The name 'Maa wal Islamiyah' points to the idea of water and Islam together — a reminder of the dual purification, of body and of soul, that sits at the heart of the faith. The complex functions as a full neighbourhood masjid, hosting the five daily prayers with strong attendance at fajr and maghrib in particular, and as a learning centre where children and occasionally adults receive structured religious instruction. Friday congregation here is lively, drawing worshippers from the narrow surrounding streets who spill out onto prayer mats laid down in the courtyard when the prayer hall fills. The khutbah is typically delivered in Kiswahili with Arabic quotations, which suits the multilingual reality of coastal Tanzanian Islam. On weekday afternoons the school side of the building takes over: rows of children sit cross-legged with their reciting boards, working through the Qur'an under the guidance of local teachers. Tajweed, memorisation, basic aqeedah and the fiqh of purification and prayer form the core of what is taught, with stories from the seerah woven in to keep the younger pupils engaged. The masjid also serves as a gathering point during Ramadan, when iftars are hosted for the poor and the travelling, and during the two Eids when the whole neighbourhood turns out in its finest clothes. Visitors are welcome to attend prayer and observe the teaching, provided they dress modestly and are mindful of lesson times. Donations toward the upkeep of the building, the teachers' modest stipends, and the provision of Qur'ans for new students are always gratefully received. In its quiet, steady way, AL-Madrasatul Maa-wal Islamiyah embodies the old East African pattern in which the mosque and the school grow up together, inseparable in the life of the believer. Long-standing worshippers remember how the mosque grew, brick by brick, through small neighbourhood contributions, and they still recall the names of the elders who carried the project through difficult years, a memory they pass on to the children so that gratitude for the institution is never lost.
