About

Tucked into the quiet outskirts of Kuang in the state of Selangor, Surau Al Azhar carries a name that resonates across the wider Muslim world. Al Azhar, a title drawn from the same Arabic root as the word for radiance, evokes the ancient learning tradition of Cairo, and choosing it for a neighbourhood prayer house in rural Malaysia is a small but meaningful gesture of connection between Southeast Asia and the lands of the Nile. A surau in the Malay sense is more intimate than a grand masjid. It is a local room or small building where daily prayers are offered, Quran lessons are held after Maghrib, and children first learn how to stand in a row with their elders. Kuang itself sits in the northern stretch of Selangor, where palm estates give way to low hills and old railway lines once carried tin and rubber down to the coast. The community here is mostly Malay, with a quiet weave of Chinese and Indian neighbours, and the surau functions as the spiritual heartbeat of several surrounding kampung streets. Its architecture follows the gentle idiom of Malaysian vernacular design, with a pitched roof suited to tropical rains, ventilated walls that invite the breeze, and a modest dome or finial marking the direction of qibla towards the Holy Mosque in Makkah. Five times a day the adhan drifts out across the rice fields and roadside warungs, calling farmers, office workers and schoolchildren to step aside from their daily tasks. On Fridays the space fills with men in baju Melayu and songkok, while women and girls gather for tadarus sessions during the month of Ramadan, reciting the Quran together after breaking their fast with dates and warm kuih. The spirit of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, is felt in the simplicity and the welcome. Visitors travelling through Kuang who pause here for a prayer will usually be offered a glass of cool water, a friendly smile and directions to the nearest stall selling nasi lemak, and nobody is ever treated as a stranger for long.
