About
Within the Segambut Bahgia neighbourhood of north western Kuala Lumpur, the Madrasatul Tarbiyatul Islamiah Kampong Melayu combines the functions of a masjid and a religious school, the name itself translating from Arabic as the School of Islamic Nurture, set within a traditional Malay village pocket within the Malaysian capital. Kampong Melayu Segambut Bahgia is one of the older Malay villages that have survived amid the rapid urbanisation of greater Kuala Lumpur, retaining a community feel with wooden houses, narrow lanes, and a strong commitment to traditional Malay Islamic life. The tarbiyah tradition places spiritual, moral, and intellectual cultivation in its mission, guiding children from the earliest years through Arabic letters, Quranic recitation, basic fiqh concerning purification and prayer, the sirah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and the noble character of the Companions, may God be pleased with them. Kuala Lumpur itself grew from a tin mining outpost in the mid nineteenth century into the modern Malaysian capital, its skyline now dominated by the Petronas Towers, but its neighbourhoods still preserve the Malay mosque centred life that has shaped the peninsula for centuries. Architecturally the madrasah mosque follows the Malaysian vernacular with tiered pyramidal roof, timber trim, covered verandahs for slipping off shoes, and an ablution area screened by lattice work. Inside, the prayer hall welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers, with the children of the madrasah often joining the elders in the rows, learning by example the proper manners of congregational worship. Weekly Jumu'ah gatherings draw the wider kampung, and Ramadan brings nightly taraweeh, communal iftar, and intensified memorisation classes. The two Eid congregations are particularly lively, with children receiving sweets and small gifts from their teachers and neighbours. The institution also organises kenduri feasts during weddings and the Mawlid celebrations in Rabi al Awwal. Visitors seeking a taste of enduring Malay kampung Islam in the heart of the modern capital will feel warmly welcomed here. Kampung elders often share memories of the founders with the newest pupils, ensuring each generation remembers those whose vision gave rise to this beloved institution.
