About
Few places on earth carry the quiet gravity of the Great Mosque of Kairouan. Standing within the walled Tunisian city of Kairouan, roughly one hundred and sixty kilometres south of Tunis, it ranks among the oldest mosques in the Islamic world and is widely regarded as the mother sanctuary of North Africa. Its founding is traced to the year 670 of the common era, when the commander Uqba ibn Nafi, may God be pleased with him, set down the first stones of a garrison city on a dry plain chosen, according to tradition, after a freshwater spring miraculously welled up in the wilderness. Pilgrims have long held that seven visits to Kairouan carry a deep devotional weight, and the city became known across the Maghreb as a place of memory and blessing.
The mosque was rebuilt and expanded across successive centuries, most extensively during the Aghlabid era of the ninth century, when the form we see today took shape. Its vast courtyard of pale limestone is framed by colonnaded porticoes whose columns were gathered from Roman, Byzantine, and earlier African sites, so that fluted shafts of green marble, porphyry, and granite stand shoulder to shoulder like witnesses from different ages. A slightly sloping pavement channels rainwater into a central marble basin, where it is filtered and stored in cisterns below, still supplying the ablution area during dry summers.
The prayer hall shelters beneath seventeen aisles of horseshoe arches opening towards a mihrab faced with lustreware tiles imported from Baghdad, themselves some of the earliest surviving examples of Islamic ceramic art. Beside the mihrab rises an eleven step minbar of carved teak, assembled around the year 862, making it the oldest pulpit still in its original place anywhere in the world. A square, three tiered minaret, nearly thirty two metres tall, watches over the complex and is counted among the earliest surviving minarets in Islam, its silhouette becoming the template for countless later towers across the western Muslim lands.
Kairouan grew around this sanctuary into a renowned centre of learning, producing scholars, jurists, poets, and scientists whose libraries once rivalled Cordoba and Baghdad. The Great Mosque still hosts five daily prayers, its weathered walls absorbing the voices of worshippers who continue a tradition more than thirteen centuries deep.
