About

Embedded in the daily rhythm of prayer in the surrounding area, مسجد السيدة لطيفة عباس فريد رحمها الله welcomes worshippers throughout the day.. The recognition of female benefactors in Islamic civilisation has a long and honourable pedigree, reaching back to Khadija bint Khuwaylid, may God be pleased with her, the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, whose wealth supported the early community, and extending through figures such as Zubaydah, may God be pleased with her, whose caravan wells still mark the old pilgrimage route from Kufa to Mecca. Jeddah itself is the historic gateway through which pilgrims have entered the Hijaz for many centuries, its old coral stone quarter of al Balad preserving the layered merchant architecture of the Red Sea world and listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Architecturally the mosque follows the modern Jeddah idiom that draws on the port city's cosmopolitan tradition, combining cream limestone cladding, a single turquoise tiled dome raised on an octagonal drum, twin slender minarets finished in matching ceramic work and a forecourt paved in warm sandstone. Inside, the prayer hall opens onto a mihrab lined with patterned tile, a mimbar carved from inlaid timber in the Hijazi manner and a carpet woven in deep green marked with gold medallions. A women's section opens from the eastern side, fitted with its own entrance and wudu facilities. Daily prayers follow the published Jeddah timetable, the Jumu'ah sermon is delivered in classical Arabic and Ramadan evenings bring long tarawih nights recited by trained qurra alongside imported hafiz guests. Eid mornings fill the forecourt with families arriving from the surrounding neighbourhoods, and visitors are expected to dress modestly, leave shoes on the angled racks and silence mobile devices before entering. Within easy reach lie the al Balad heritage quarter, the King Fahd fountain rising above the Red Sea, the Floating mosque and the Corniche extending north along the coast of the Hijaz. Community members gather before the fajr adhan to recite portions of the Quran together, and the younger residents learn the foundational principles of Islamic worship from the elder men who have been praying in this masjid for most of their lives. Children rehearse their tajwid in the small classroom beside the main hall, the older pupils guiding the younger through the shorter surahs and the etiquette of ablution, while adult members gather on quiet afternoons for study circles on the biography of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and on the practical rulings that shape daily worship. Visitors arriving from neighbouring districts are welcomed with customary hospitality and offered fresh dates and a cup of sweetened tea in the anteroom before prayer.
