About

Tucked into the dense neighbourhood of Karet Kuningan in South Jakarta, Masjid Ar Royan functions as both a community mosque and the local branch of PAC LDII Karet Kuningan, a civic and educational organisation that runs Qur'an classes, youth programmes, and family services across the capital of Indonesia. Jakarta itself has been a centre of trade and Islam for many centuries, with the first mosques rising in its harbour quarter during the time of the Demak and Banten sultanates. Karet Kuningan lies within the commercial heartland of the modern city, where office towers, embassies, and older residential alleys stand side by side beneath the tropical sky.

The name Ar Royan is drawn from an honoured tradition attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, who described a special gate of paradise by which those who fasted during their lives would enter on the Day of Judgement. Calling a mosque by this name places fasting, patience, and restraint at the centre of the congregation's identity. Every time a worshipper passes through the doors, the name quietly reminds the heart that devotion often shines brightest in the unseen acts of abstaining for the sake of God alone.

The building itself is modest in scale yet lovingly maintained. A tiered tropical roof in the familiar Javanese style shelters a bright prayer hall cooled by ceiling fans and open louvred windows. Geometric tilework decorates the mihrab, a carved wooden minbar rises beside it, and a small madrasa wing hosts children's Qur'an classes every afternoon. Women pray on a raised section at the rear, separated by a carved screen that follows the traditional arrangement of Indonesian community masjids.

Office workers, street vendors, motorbike riders, and local families gather here for the five daily prayers, for Jumu'ah, and for taraweeh during Ramadan, when the narrow lanes outside fill with carts selling dates, bubur, and sweet iced drinks. On this page travellers, neighbours, and commuters will find the current prayer times, address, and a map that ease the search for a calm corner of worship amid the unhurried generosity so typical of the older kampungs of central Jakarta.
