About

Named in honour of the illustrious scholar Shaykh al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah al Harrani, the masjid at Harran in the province of Sanliurfa honours one of the most influential Muslim theologians and jurists of the later medieval period. Harran is among the most venerable cities on the face of the earth, mentioned in the Book of Genesis as the home of the Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, after his journey from the city of Ur. Its ancient beehive houses, built from mud brick in a distinctive conical shape, have sheltered generations of farmers on the dusty plains where the Euphrates and Tigris basins meet.

The scholar Taqi al Din Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah was born in this very region in the year 1263 before his family fled westward to Damascus as Mongol armies approached. He grew into a prolific writer whose treatises on theology, jurisprudence, and the refutation of philosophical error filled many volumes and influenced reformist movements across the later Muslim world. His student Ibn al Qayyim al Jawziyya carried forward his teachings on tazkiyyah, the purification of the heart, and on deep love for the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, through the beautiful work known as Madarij al Salikin.

The mosque in Harran reflects the building traditions of upper Mesopotamia, where walls of yellow limestone resist the strong summer heat and small windows preserve cool interiors through the long hot afternoons. A modest minaret rises beside the prayer hall, and from its balcony the muezzin calls the adhan across fields of cotton, pistachio orchards, and herds of sheep grazing the open plain. Local families, university students from nearby Sanliurfa, and visitors exploring the archaeological remains of the ancient city gather here for congregational worship.

Accurate prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Harran mosque appear on this page, along with its precise address, a location map, and notes that guide residents of Sanliurfa province, travellers on the road from Urfa to the Syrian border, and scholars of Islamic history to this historically meaningful masjid during every season of the long Anatolian agricultural year.
