About

Commemorating the celebrated Algerian reformer Abdul Hamid ibn Badis, may God have mercy on him, founder of the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars and a central figure in the twentieth century revival of Islamic identity in the country, this mosque rises proudly in El Eulma within the Setif province of north eastern Algeria. Ibn Badis, born in Constantine in eighteen eighty nine, devoted his life to educating Algerians in their faith, Arabic language and national dignity under the pressures of French colonial rule, and his famous declaration that the Algerian people are Muslim and part of the Arab nation became a rallying cry for independence. El Eulma is an agricultural and commercial town on the Setif high plain, its Roman ruins still visible on the outskirts and its weekly markets drawing farmers from across the region. The mosque bearing Ibn Badis's name is a relatively recent construction in the neo Andalusian style favoured by contemporary Algerian architects, featuring a white plastered facade with bold horseshoe arch portals, a green glazed tile pyramidal roof and a slender square minaret modelled loosely on the Koutoubia of Marrakesh. Inside, the main prayer hall is divided into parallel aisles by round arches rising from whitewashed piers, the floor covered with thick local carpets woven in Setif traditional patterns and the mihrab decorated with a cascade of muqarnas in cream plaster. A framed portrait of Ibn Badis is absent in keeping with Algerian mosque convention, but his distinctive calligraphic slogan adorns the entry hall. Friday prayers are well attended, the sermon often referencing Ibn Badis's teachings on the balance between rational inquiry and religious certainty. The adjoining madrasah teaches the classical curriculum he championed, including tafsir, hadith, Arabic grammar and sirah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. During Ramadan the mosque distributes chorba frik at iftar and hosts nightly tarawih with a complete recitation of the Qur'an. Visitors travelling along the autoroute east west between Setif and Constantine can stop easily, entering with modest dress and a respectful silence that honours both the building and the scholar whose name it bears.
