About
Rising among the tree lined avenues of Cimahi in the highlands of West Java, Masjid Jami Al Istiqlal carries a name charged with historical feeling. Istiqlal is the Arabic word for independence, the same word inscribed above the vast national mosque in Jakarta that commemorates Indonesia's freedom after centuries of colonial rule. By adopting this title, the community in Cimahi placed their humble Friday mosque within that wider story, reminding every worshipper that the freedom to pray and to raise their children in faith is a gift to be guarded and renewed in each generation. The word jami simply indicates that this is a congregational mosque, large enough to host the weekly Friday gathering. Cimahi itself sits on a plateau west of Bandung, where the air is cooler than in the coastal plains and the surrounding hills are dotted with tea estates, military barracks and quiet neighbourhoods of small tiled roof houses. The mosque follows a style that has become characteristic of mid sized Indonesian cities, with a green domed main prayer hall, a tall minaret from which the adhan can be heard above the traffic, and wide tiled verandas where sandals are left in neat rows before worshippers enter barefoot. Ornamental ventilation panels allow the mountain breeze to flow through the hall, keeping it fresh even on warm afternoons. The daily life of the congregation follows the familiar pattern of the five prayers, supplemented by Quran lessons for children in the late afternoon and by weekly majelis taklim study circles for adults who wish to deepen their understanding of the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. During Ramadan the courtyard transforms into a communal dining space, with neighbours sharing bowls of kolak, fried snacks and sweet tea before the evening prayer. Eid mornings bring the largest crowds of the year, as entire families arrive in bright new clothes, greeting one another and embracing across the generations. Travellers passing through Cimahi can slip in for any of the five prayers without fuss, and visitors will find the atmosphere calm, orderly and quietly generous.
