About
Along a quiet village lane in the rice growing regency of Bojonegoro in East Java, the Taman Pendidikan Al Quran TPA TPQ Al Muttaqin offers children a cherished gateway into reading, memorising, and understanding the Holy Book. Across Indonesia, the Taman Pendidikan Al Quran system, often shortened to TPA or TPQ, provides afternoon Quran instruction for hundreds of thousands of young students between the ages of four and twelve, complementing their regular schooling with a steady foundation in recitation and basic tajwid. The name Al Muttaqin means the God conscious, drawn from a Quranic phrase describing those whose hearts are guided by reverence.
Bojonegoro itself is a historic regency, once an inland stop along the trade routes of the Bengawan Solo, the longest river in Java, and known today for its teak forests, its oil and gas fields, and a quietly devout Javanese Muslim culture. The surrounding villages of Soko and Tuban have long maintained small pesantren and TPQ where religious instruction weaves seamlessly into the rhythms of rural life.
The building is modest and warmly welcoming. A single storey brick and plaster hall painted in cream and green, shaded by a red tiled pitched roof, sits behind a small courtyard planted with frangipani and young mango saplings. A simple concrete veranda provides a gathering space for children arriving after school, and shoes are left at the entrance on wooden racks before students enter the classroom. A small minaret at one corner carries the call to prayer for the five daily gatherings, which the older students attend alongside their teachers.
Inside, the hall is simple and bright. Low carpets cover the tiled floor, where children sit in small circles with rehal wooden stands holding their Qurans before them. Whitewashed walls carry colourful posters of the Arabic alphabet, the names of God, and verses of encouragement. A modest mihrab niche on the qibla wall marks the direction of prayer, and a small bookshelf holds copies of the Quran, simple biographies of the prophets, peace be upon them, and local religious primers.
The TPQ is the heart of the village's religious life, shaping generations of Bojonegoro children through patience, repetition, and warm community care.
