About

Öz Elif Camii bears a name of unusual warmth. Öz in Turkish conveys the sense of 'pure', 'genuine', or 'essential', while Elif is the Arabic letter alif and also a common Turkish girl's name; the alif stands at the beginning of every divine name, at the head of the Qur'anic alphabet, and is invested in Sufi tradition with profound symbolic meaning as the letter of divine unity — its single upright stroke a visual emblem of the oneness of God. To name a mosque Öz Elif is therefore to gesture both towards the beloved family member in whose memory the mosque may have been built, and towards the deeper theological resonances of the letter itself. The Batıkent mosque bearing this name is a well-proportioned structure of recent construction, with a single slim minaret, a central dome, and a carefully maintained forecourt. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones and lit by tall windows on the qibla wall. The mihrab is finished with restrained Kütahya tilework, and the walls carry calligraphic panels including the divine names and short verses from the Qur'an. The imam's Friday sermons are known for a warm, accessible style, and his recitation is careful and clear. Women pray in a comfortable upper gallery, and children attend Qur'an classes in the annex throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih and community iftars organised by local families. The mosque's small ceremonial calligraphy collection includes a beautiful single alif in gold leaf on a dark blue ground, commissioned from an Ankara calligrapher and displayed just inside the entrance, a visual embodiment of the very letter at the centre of the mosque's name and of the divine unity that the whole religion of Islam exists to proclaim. For Muslim visitors to the western districts of Ankara, Öz Elif Camii is a welcoming and gently reflective place to pray, and the single upright letter that stands at the heart of its name is itself a small reminder of the oneness of God that lies at the heart of the whole religion of Islam.
