About

Sultan Aziziye Camii bears the name of Sultan ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz (Abdülaziz I), the thirty-second Ottoman Sultan, who reigned from 1861 to 1876 and who is remembered among other things for his patronage of mosque-building during a period of significant reform and modernisation in the Ottoman Empire. Mosques bearing the name Aziziye were constructed in numerous towns across the empire during and after his reign, and the name has continued to be given to new mosques in modern Turkey as a mark of continuity with the Ottoman devotional legacy. The Batıkent example is a substantial modern structure built in the neo-classical Ottoman style, with a single slim minaret, a large central dome, and a broad stone-paved courtyard. The interior is finished to a high standard, with a carpet in warm tones, a carefully worked mihrab, and calligraphic panels of considerable quality along the walls. A wooden minbar carved in traditional style stands to the right of the mihrab. The women's gallery is spacious and well-appointed. The imam is supported by muezzins trained in classical Turkish recitation, and Friday attendance is very high. Sermons often engage thoughtfully with Ottoman Islamic history, drawing lessons from the reigns of the sultans who patronised mosque-building as part of their broader responsibility for the welfare of the Muslim community. Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year, and adult study circles cover a wide range of subjects. During Ramadan the mosque runs an extensive programme of tarawih, Qur'an khatms, and community iftars. On the anniversary of the founding of the Republic, which often falls near important Islamic dates in the lunar calendar, the mosque hosts a small gathering at which the imam reflects on the relationship between Turkish national memory and the longer Ottoman Islamic heritage — a quiet but carefully considered contribution to one of the perennial conversations of modern Turkish Muslim life. For Muslim visitors to the western districts of Ankara, Sultan Aziziye Camii is a memorable place of prayer and a fitting tribute to an Ottoman sultan whose patronage of mosques continues to shape the religious landscape of the Turkish-speaking world to the present day.
