About

Hasan Tamer Mescidi is a neighbourhood prayer hall in Batıkent named in memory of Hasan Tamer, a local benefactor whose family funded its construction and continues to support its upkeep — a pattern of private religious endowment that is one of the defining features of modern Turkish Muslim life and a continuation of the older vaqf tradition. The mescid is housed in a purpose-built structure of two storeys, with a simple minaret rising above the residential rooftops and a small, well-kept forecourt. Inside, the main prayer hall is warmly lit, carpeted in the familiar pattern of Turkish mosques, and decorated with calligraphy by a contemporary Ankara master whose panels of basmala and kalima-i tayyibah hang above the mihrab. The imam is known in Batıkent for a clear, youthful style of sermon that addresses the practical concerns of working families — the balancing of religious obligations with long working hours, the education of children, the care of elderly parents, and the responsibilities of honest commerce. Women pray in a spacious upper gallery reached by a side staircase, and the ablution facilities are heated in winter and spotlessly maintained. Qur'an classes for children run on Saturdays and Sundays, taught by volunteers from the congregation, and a small shop beside the entrance sells modestly priced religious books, prayer beads, and miswak sticks. During Ramadan the mescid runs a full programme of tarawih and iftar meals, with the latter prepared by a rota of local families who take pride in hosting their neighbours. The little bookshop beside the entrance is run by a retired Turkish teacher from the congregation, who takes evident pleasure in guiding newcomers toward suitable titles on the fundamentals of belief, the life of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, or the practical fiqh of prayer and fasting, often slipping in a small hardcover Qur'an at a reduced price for anyone who mentions they do not yet own one. For Muslim visitors to Batıkent, Hasan Tamer Mescidi is easy to find, unfailingly welcoming, and a good example of the way in which ordinary Turkish neighbourhoods organise their spiritual life around the memory of earlier generations' piety and the steady rhythm of the five daily prayers.
