About
Demsa Evleri Camii serves the residents of the Demsa Evleri housing estate in Batıkent, a large planned neighbourhood on the western edge of Ankara that grew during the 1990s and early 2000s as the capital expanded to accommodate a rising middle class. The mosque is a relatively recent construction in the classical Turkish style, with a single slim minaret, a central dome flanked by half-domes, and a forecourt paved in grey stone that is kept meticulously clean. The interior is spacious and airy, with tall windows admitting plenty of light, a carpet in the familiar red and cream pattern of Turkish mosques, and a mihrab set with soft blue Kütahya tilework. The women's gallery is generous in size and fitted with its own ablution area, which reflects the thoughtful planning that has gone into the whole structure. The imam, appointed through the Diyanet, is a hafız whose recitation during tarawih draws worshippers from neighbouring streets each Ramadan, and his Friday sermons are known for being both scholarly and practical. Children attend Qur'an and ethics classes in the annex during weekends and school holidays, and a small library of Islamic books is available for residents to borrow. The mosque's forecourt is planted with young plane trees and rose bushes, and becomes a gentle meeting place for families in the early evenings. Because Batıkent is home to many young professional families, the congregation includes a notable number of university-educated worshippers who engage seriously with questions of modern Islamic life, and study circles sometimes form spontaneously after the evening prayer. A sundial in the courtyard, installed in the traditional Ottoman manner, marks the prayer times by the angle of its shadow, a small but beautiful concession to the older astronomical tradition that regulated Muslim worship for centuries before the arrival of printed calendars and digital displays, and children are often seen crouching beside it trying to read off the hour of the next prayer. For any visitor to the western districts of Ankara, Demsa Evleri Camii offers a dignified and welcoming place to pray, and the broader neighbourhood is safe, green, and well-served by public transport back to the city centre.
