About
Demetevler Merkez Camii serves as the central mosque of the Demetevler neighbourhood in Batıkent, on the western edge of Ankara. Demetevler — literally 'bouquet houses' — is a poetic place name chosen by the original planners of the district, reflecting the mid-twentieth-century Turkish practice of giving housing developments names that evoked pleasant domestic imagery. The Merkez Camii of Demetevler is the principal mosque of the neighbourhood, and as such is a substantial and dignified structure built in the neo-classical Ottoman style that has become the default idiom of major Turkish mosque architecture over recent decades. Twin slim minarets flank a central dome, a broad stone-paved courtyard accommodates the overflow of the Friday congregation, and the interior is finished to a high standard. The prayer hall is spacious and airy, carpeted in warm tones and lit by tall windows. The mihrab is of carved stone and tile, the minbar is of carved wood in traditional style, and the walls carry calligraphic panels in several classical scripts. The women's gallery is generous in size and well-appointed. The mosque is served by a team of imams and muezzins, and Friday attendance is very high, with the khutba broadcast onto the courtyard for worshippers unable to find space inside. Qur'an and ethics classes for children run throughout the year, and adult study circles cover a wide range of subjects. During Ramadan the mosque runs an extensive programme of tarawih, Qur'an khatms, and community iftars. A small annual charity event organised by the mosque's women's committee raises funds for families in the neighbourhood facing particular hardship, with traditional Turkish pastries and homemade foods sold from a stall in the courtyard, and the cheerful industriousness of these gatherings is itself a small demonstration of the broad range of roles that women play in the religious life of Turkish neighbourhoods. For Muslim visitors to the western districts of Ankara, Demetevler Merkez Camii offers a dignified place of prayer and a genuine experience of Turkish neighbourhood Islam at scale, and the surrounding streets contain ample options for tea, modest family restaurants, and a leisurely walk in the cool of the evening once the maghrib prayer has been performed.
