About
ATB Mescidi serves the businesses, visitors, and employees of the Ankara Commodities Exchange (Ankara Ticaret Borsası), whose initials give the prayer hall its name. It is in this sense one of the growing number of workplace mosques in modern Turkey — prayer spaces integrated into commercial, industrial, or administrative complexes so that Muslim workers can fulfil the daily prayers without leaving the building. The mescid is not a freestanding mosque with a minaret, but a dedicated prayer hall of considered design, carpeted in the standard red-gold pattern of Turkish prayer carpets, with a clean white mihrab, a simple minbar, and wall-mounted digital clocks displaying the times of the five daily prayers according to the Diyanet calendar. Men and women pray in separate, curtained areas, and there are ablution facilities nearby that are kept spotlessly clean. A volunteer imam from among the staff leads the congregational prayers, and on Fridays the hall becomes especially busy as workers from across the exchange gather for the noon prayer and khutba. The atmosphere is unhurried and dignified, a small island of remembrance set within the rhythm of the working day. During Ramadan, colleagues arrange informal iftars in the common areas adjacent to the mescid, and the evening prayers are well-attended. Visitors with business at the exchange are welcome to use the prayer hall during normal working hours, and staff at the front desk can direct newcomers to the entrance. ATB Mescidi is a quiet example of a widespread Turkish practice that deserves more attention abroad: the careful provision of prayer space within the ordinary institutions of economic life, so that worship is woven into the working week rather than set apart from it. On days when the exchange is particularly busy, the hall fills to capacity for the noon prayer and worshippers overflow into the adjacent lobby, their briefcases and folders set aside momentarily for the rakʿāt that form a small island of stillness at the centre of a trading day full of numbers, contracts, and the restless movement of market prices. For any traveller combining business with a wish to maintain the daily prayers in central Ankara, it is a welcome and useful facility.
