About

Honouring the noble Hamza ibn Abd al Muttalib, may God be pleased with him, uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, this mosque in Bab Ezzouar within the Algiers wilaya welcomes the busy residential and commercial community of the eastern suburbs. Bab Ezzouar grew during the twentieth century into one of the largest neighbourhoods of Algiers, home to universities, business districts, and the expanding suburbs that stretch toward the Houari Boumediene International Airport. Algiers itself, known in Arabic as al Jaza'ir, grew from a small Berber settlement into a major Ottoman regency port and later the capital of modern Algeria.

Hamza ibn Abd al Muttalib, may God be pleased with him, was one of the most beloved uncles of the Messenger, a brave warrior and hunter of Quraysh who embraced Islam after hearing that Abu Jahl had insulted his nephew. From that moment he became a fierce defender of the faith, joining the battle of Badr where he fought with extraordinary courage. He was martyred at the Battle of Uhud in 625, and the Messenger mourned him with such tenderness that he called him Sayyid al Shuhada, the chief of the martyrs, and asked that every martyr to come should be remembered in his company.

Naming an Algerian mosque after him anchors daily worship in the founding sacrifice of the first generation of believers. Algeria produced generations of martyrs of its own during the long struggle for independence from colonial rule, and the memory of Hamza resonates with the national sense that the faith is worth every sacrifice offered for its sake with sincerity and devotion to the Almighty.

Architecturally the mosque reflects the classic Maghrebi style. A square tiered minaret in the Andalusian manner, whitewashed walls with green trim, a courtyard with a central ablution fountain, horseshoe arches framing the portico, and an interior of cedar ceilings carved with interlacing geometry create a space of quiet beauty. Zellige tile wainscoting wraps the lower walls, a gypsum muqarnas mihrab filters the light, and patterned carpets stretch across the prayer hall.

Accurate daily prayer timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at Mosquée Hamza appear on this page alongside its Bab Ezzouar address, a clear map pin, and considerate notes for visitors approaching from Algiers centre, the Casbah, or the airport road. Ramadan evenings bring iftars of shorba frik, bourek, harira, sweet qalb el louz, and mint tea shared with every neighbour. Travellers exploring the Algerian capital are welcomed with the warm North African greeting, invited to pray within the cool shaded hall, and affectionately encouraged to whisper a sincere du'a asking Almighty God to grant the noble martyred uncle the highest companionship of his blessed nephew among the lords of the paradise.
