Within the bustling Azimpur quarter of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, the Mirpur Shahi Masjid and Madrasa Complex, known in Bengali as Mirpur Shahi Masjid o Madrasa Complex, forms a combined centre of prayer and Islamic learning in one of South Asia's most densely populated cities. Dhaka has been a significant Muslim settlement since the thirteenth century, when the region of Bengal was drawn into the Delhi Sultanate, and flourished as a Mughal provincial capital in the seventeenth century under the name Jahangirnagar, producing the ruins of forts, the celebrated Lalbagh complex, and a dense network of mosques, madrasahs, and shrines across its old quarters.

Daily prayers gather neighbours from the crowded streets of Azimpur, teachers from the University of Dhaka nearby, students from the madrasa, and workers from the surrounding markets.
