About
Offering a place of Qur'anic learning in the Tunisian oasis town of as Sanad in Gafsa governorate, Jam'iyat Riyad al Jannah lil Qur'an al Karim bil Sanad is an association dedicated to the memorisation and teaching of the noble Qur'an among the children and young adults of the surrounding neighbourhoods. Gafsa itself is one of the most ancient cities of Tunisia, known in antiquity as Capsa and famous for the Capsian prehistoric culture that took its name from the area. Through the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods Gafsa remained an important oasis town linking the Mediterranean coast to the Saharan interior, and its springs, date palms, and olive groves have fed local families for countless generations.
The name Riyad al Jannah, the Gardens of Paradise, evokes one of the most beloved hadith of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, in which he taught that between his minbar and his house in Madinah lies a garden of the gardens of Paradise. Scholars have further applied the designation to the circles of Qur'anic recitation and knowledge seeking held anywhere in the Muslim world, noting that the Prophet taught that when people gather in a house of God, reciting the book of God and studying it among themselves, tranquillity descends upon them, mercy envelops them, and the angels surround them. Naming a Tunisian Qur'anic association after these gardens plants a gentle daily reminder of that enveloping mercy.
The compound consists of a modest prayer hall, classrooms where pupils work through the thirty ajza of the Qur'an under the guidance of their teachers, a small library, and a courtyard for ablution. Pupils range in age from small children beginning the Qa'idah primer through older students working toward complete memorisation and ijaza certification in the main narrations. Friday prayers fill the hall with families drawn from as Sanad and neighbouring villages, and during Ramadan the association organises intensive review sessions alongside collective iftars of harira, brik, and sweet makroudh. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Riyad al Jannah centre appear on this page for every resident and visitor.
