Djame Masdjied Taibah

Djame Masdjied Taibah in Amsterdam Zuidoost, the southeastern district of the Dutch capital often called the Bijlmer, serves a large South Asian Muslim community, particularly worshippers of Surinamese Hindustani and Pakistani origin whose families arrived in the Netherlands during the waves of migration following Surinamese independence in 1975 and through labour migration from South Asia. The name Taibah, more commonly transliterated as Tayyiba, is one of the honoured names of the blessed city of Madinah, referring to its purity and goodness, and the mosque's founders chose it to evoke the spiritual dignity of the Prophet's city and to invite their congregation to aspire to the same character. The Bijlmer is a distinctive neighbourhood originally built in the late 1960s as a modernist high rise housing project and since transformed into one of Amsterdam's most culturally diverse areas. Djame Masdjied Taibah is housed in a building adapted for religious use, with a green sign indicating its identity and modest architectural flourishes such as small domes or minaret motifs added to the facade. Inside, the prayer hall is arranged in the classical manner, carpeted, facing the qibla, with a mihrab and mimbar for the Friday sermon which is delivered in Urdu, Dutch, and Arabic to accommodate the congregation's linguistic needs. The mosque is also a centre of South Asian Islamic culture, offering classes in Qur'an recitation with tajwid, Urdu language for children who might otherwise lose their heritage tongue, and sessions exploring the rich scholarly tradition of the South Asian ulama. Ramadan brings iftars with South Asian cuisine of biryani, samosas, and pakoras, tarawih led by huffaz, and nightly Qur'an khatm sessions, while Eid celebrations gather the community in joyful remembrance of Allah's blessings. The annual Eid celebrations at Djame Masdjied Taibah in the Bijlmer are particularly joyous occasions, with sisters preparing trays of South Asian sweets like barfi, gulab jamun, and ladoo to be shared after the festive prayer, and children receiving new clothes and small gifts from their parents and aunties, a custom that preserves the warmth of South Asian Eid traditions even far from the ancestral subcontinent and passes that cultural heritage to the Dutch born generation.
