Eid in the West: How Muslim Communities Celebrate

📅 16 Apr 2026 ⏱ 1 min 👁 6
For the millions of Muslims who live in North America and Europe, Eid al-Fitr is a day that mixes the familiar with the local. Here's what it looks like on the ground.

**Morning prayer.** Most Western cities host Eid prayer outdoors or in large rented halls. London's Trafalgar Square Eid celebration draws tens of thousands. In New York, Muslim communities pray at Prospect Park and Flushing Meadows. In Paris, the Grand Mosque and public parks host prayer. Seats fill fast — arrive early.

**Family and food.** After prayer, families visit each other. In Dearborn or Jersey City, you might go to three houses in a single afternoon — sweet atayef, kataif, or halvah awaits at each. British-Bengali families serve rasgullas and shemai. Moroccan-Dutch families bake msemen and sfenj. North African Parisians lay out trays of chebakia.

**Gifting the children.** Eidi — cash gifts from relatives to children — is universal. Older kids compare takings for weeks. Younger ones spend theirs on toys, sweets or a theme park trip.

**Mosque fairs and fairs.** Many cities now host Eid fairs: bouncy castles, halal food trucks, henna artists, spice sellers. London's Trafalgar Square, Toronto's Thorncliffe Park and Chicago's Toyota Park have become major community gatherings.

**Charity.** Every Muslim pays zakat al-fitr before Eid prayer — typically $10-15 per family member in the West — distributed to the needy through local mosques or charities like Islamic Relief.

Eid in the West is proof that community travels. Wherever you're celebrating, MuslimAxis shows you the nearest Eid prayer location and what time to arrive.
